It is the consequence for children at school to have homework. It is a reinforcement on their understanding about the lesson at school. But it seems many parents are conflicted, feeling have no knowledge enough to help them, especially when their kids get frustrated, angry or give up. Of course, it’s not your job to “teach” your child the subjects they are studying at school. Teaching is done best by the professionals on education. What you have to do is encourage and motivate them.

Most kids want a little break from “school work” when they reach home. That can be snack after school or play with friends and siblings. As each child is unique, the best learning time depends upon your child’s disposition and energy variations. But, it is important to be consistent in time and place. So your child is accustomed to settling into the block of time to focus upon school work. Never ruin your child’s subject activity unless the child is totally frustrated. Instead of sharpening the pencil and working out the actual homework assignment yourself, your task is to encourage your child to remember the lesson. If there are several problems to handle, continue encourage your child to solve them. When your child has successfully answered the question, cheer her, pat on the back or a “high five”. This will make her confidence higher.

If your child is a bit frustrated, postpone the homework session until your child is relaxed again. The homework still needs finishing but your child may need to calm down in order to focus. Then, avoid rewarding your kid with emotional outbreaks or helpless behaviors such as playing video games or watching TV. It is better to use the remainder of her homework time.

Remember, it is totally not your job to teach your kids the lesson from school. If your child is truly desperate with his/her homework, get more info from the teacher.
